Background
Emergency physician by training, disaster response by career. Ten years rotating through federal deployments — hurricanes, a chemical plant fire, two floods — the kind of work where the paperwork arrives months after the bodies do.
Recruited out of a deployment where the casualty figures did not reconcile with the casualties. He filed three separate queries about the discrepancy through official channels. The fourth conversation was not official, and was not about the paperwork.
Writes everything down. Files reports nobody asked for. Keeps a copy. His colleagues read this as bureaucratic temperament and his case officer reads it as the reason he was worth recruiting: a man who documents what he sees, including the parts that reflect badly on him.
Operationally he is support. He is not a shooter and has never pretended otherwise — a position Gutter Key revised for him at some cost. His value is that people who should have died on his watch have not, and that he will say plainly what happened to the ones who did.
Since the loss of his left eye he has been on stand-down, retraining monocular for clinical procedure and, for the first time, taking firearms and close-quarters instruction seriously.
